Halton Community Legal Services
For over twenty five years, Halton Community Legal Services has been providing high quality legal assistance to the low-income community in Halton.
The legal clinic started operation in October 1977 with grant money from the provincial government, to serve Georgetown, Acton and surrounding areas in north Halton.
What had originally been Halton Hills Community Legal Clinic incorporated on April 11, 1994 and the name was changed to Halton Community Legal Services to reflect the clinic service area now covering the entire Regional Municipality of Halton.
At this time, the clinic has five full time staff: two lawyers, one community legal worker, an office manager and an intake worker. Overseeing the management of the clinic is a dedicated volunteer board of directors.
Guided by a commitment to provide legal services to financially disadvantaged people wherever they reside in the region, very effective partnerships have developed with community service providers like Kerr St. Community Services and Burlington Counselling and Family Services that enable clients to receive clinic law services in their home municipality.
Presently the Clinic provides services in the areas of Ontario Works (welfare), Ontario Disability Support Program disability benefits and employment supports, tenants' rights, Employment Insurance and CPP disability pensions.
Funding for the clinic comes from Legal Aid Ontario.
